A Sailor Went to Sea Nursery Rhyme Activity

Lyrics

A sailor went to sea, sea, sea.

To see what he could see, see, see.

But all that he could see, see, see.

Was the bottom of the deep blue sea, sea, sea.

  • paper towel roll
  • white piece of paper
  • orange piece of paper

Teaching Tip: Help your child differentiate between SEE and SEA. If your child cannot spell yet, there is no need to write out those words. Help your child differentiate by saying to him or her, "You see through your telescope. What do you see? Do you see the water? Do you see the ocean? The ocean is often called a sea!" You can also use hand motions to identify the difference. Put your hand above your eyes as if you are blocking the sun. Tell your child what you see. Ask your child to place his or her hand in the same way, and have your child tell what he or she sees. You can also move your arms like waves. You can say, "I am moving my arms like the waves on the sea." Ask your child to make sea waves too!

Teaching Tip: A fun way to practice a steady beat with this song would be to sway back and forth to the beat, as if on a boat in the sea. Do this with your child. If your child is having a hard time moving to the steady beat, ask your child to move with you.

Encouragement: Good job for nursery rhyming with your child! You are practicing pronunciation, melody, and rhythm. You are teaching your child homophones, vocabulary, and so much more with A Sailor Went to Sea, Sea, Sea.
